Athens-Clarke County police are investigating the gunshot death of a 31-year-old man Sunday at his home on the west side.
The man’s wife notified police about the shooting at about midnight Sunday, saying her husband had accidentally shot himself. Police said the victim was found on a couch, dead from a gunshot wound to his head and with a revolver in his lap.
Man robbed on West Broad Street
A 41-year-old Hartwell man reported he was attacked and robbed Sunday night as he was walking in the 1600 block of West Broad Street.
Athens-Clarke County police said the victim reportedly was struck from behind with a baseball bat at about 8:10 p.m. by a man who stole a watch and cash, valued at a total of $589, from him.
The victim said he walked to St. Mary’s Hospital where he sought treatment and called police. He was unable to provide police with a good description of his attacker.
Man charged in alleged beating of girlfriend
Ricky Peek, 51, of Eastwood Terrace, was arrested Sunday night after he reportedly assaulted his girlfriend after accusing her of being with another man when she returned home from a Super Bowl party. The woman told Athens-Clarke County police that she tried going to sleep after arguing with Peek, who allegedly dragged her from bed, threw her to the floor and began hitting her.
An officer noted in a police incident report that the woman had knots on her forehead.
Peek was charged with battery under the state Family Violence Act.
Teen charged in $700 theft
A 14-year-old Athens boy was arrested Sunday after a family member caught him with his grandmother’s purse, form which $700 was missing. Athens-Clarke County police said the boy was charged with theft by taking and with being an unruly child.
Video game equipment reported stolen
A Polo Club of Athens apartment was burglarized between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday and an Xbox One, a video game controller, charging kit and games, with a total value of $645 were stolen, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
No evidence of a break-in was found, according to a police report.
Scooter stolen on Prince Avenue
A burgundy Yamaha Chappy scooter valued at $1, 000 was stolen from the 1200 block of Prince Avenue between midnight Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, Athens-Clarke County police said.
Motorcycle stolen on West Hancock
A Harley-Davidson motorcycle valued at $9, 000 was stolen from the owner’s West Hancock Avenue residence between 4 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. Sunday, according to Athens-Clarke County police. The black-and-chrome motorcycle displayed Georgia tag XCHBT and an American flag had flown from its rear, according to a police report.
