Now that you have a website, you’ll want to get the word out –and inform people of its existence.
Without advertising, many people won’t know that you have a website. It’s up to you to raise awareness and let people know. After all, there’s no point in having a website –if no one’s aware that it exists.
Fortunately, promoting your website isn’t hard. There are a number of simple ways that you can spread the word, and start driving new, relevant traffic to your town’s site. All you need is a little bit of time, and some creativity.
Here are seven easy tips to get you started.
1. Your Email Signature
One of the easiest ways to inform your town’s residents about your website is by adding a link in your email signature. Once you’ve added a signature, the link to your website can then be seen by everyone who receives an email that’s sent by you. It’s a fast and simple way to get the news out. Here are instructions for adding a signature in Gmail and Outlook/Hotmail. It’s a very quick and simple process.
2. Your Voice Mail Message
Consider mentioning your new website in your voicemail or answering machine message. Many of your town’s residents most likely have questions that can easily be answered online. Instead of having them wait for you to return their phone call, why not direct them to your website for the latest information?
3. Your Letterhead
Including your new website’s URL on your town’s letterhead is another great way to advertise your website. When you mail out meetings and agendas –or other correspondence, the recipients will be able to see that you have a new website.
4. Social Media
Social media is a great platform for getting the news out. If your municipality has social media accounts, then this is a good opportunity to reach your town’s residents with the news that you have a new website. Include the website address in the ‘about’ sections on your accounts, and try to post periodic updates on your account directing your followers to your website. If your town has a blog, be sure to update the ‘about’ page with a link to the website. You could even create a new post that mentions your new site.
5. Wikipedia
Advertising on Wikipedia? Why not! If your town has a Wikipedia page, this would be a great place to post a link to your new website. Anyone can edit Wikipedia, so take the opportunity to put the URL on your page –and start directing interested visitors there.
6. Your Town Hall Sign
Your town hall sign is another great place to advertise your new website. Signs are especially great since they command attention, and really can’t be missed. If it’s time for a new town hall sign, consider including your website’s address on it.
7. Flyers and Printouts
Making up some flyers and leaving them at the front desk is another good way to spread the word. And of course, don’t forget about election time –an especially great opportunity to promote your site. You could also print up some small, business-card-sized flyers and left then near the voting booths for residents to take home.
